It always seems funny to me how we Americans can seize on a foreign
word or phrase and completely change its meaning. In Australia, a
boomerang is an Aboriginal weapon that, if it misses its target,
returns to the thrower's hand in order to make ready for another
try. This is a very GOOD thing if you are living in the bush and
have to survive on what you can find to eat. Here in the US, it is
invariably something bad that “boomerangs” on us. An inappropriate
word, a malicious act, a tragic injustice.
In this case, we are going to go with the Aussie interpretation and welcome our own little “boomerang” to the US. Four years ago, I took a huge leap and exported a dog to another country for the first time. It was done with a great deal of trepidation and more than a little bit of anxiety. In this case, I did get the very great opportunity to actually meet the new owners before my puppy left the country, as the Bardens attended the BCOA Centennial National Specialty in Ohio before they picked up their puppy. Any lingering fears I might have felt were dismissed by Ros and Greg and their son, Shannon, when I met them and spent a week getting to know them. Loading the puppy on the plane became a lot easier when I knew the kind of home that he was going to. And what a home he found in Australia! My little Havoc! (littermate to my Latina) went on to become the youngest Borzoi in the history of Australia to achieve the Grand Champion title and the first American import Borzoi to do so. He is now a multiple Best in Specialty and Best in Show special who sleeps on his owners’ bed every night. The first litter he sired there has four members closing in on their own Grand Championships and nine already having their Australian Championships, which will make Havoc! one of the top producing sires of all time in Australia. The Bardens were so pleased with the first litter that they decided to repeat it. When they called to offer one of those puppies to me, I leapt at the opportunity. Kenibea’s Out Ov Ink, “Dundee” arrived in Texas in December, 2007 and immediately captured the hearts of all he has met. His impish air rings very familiar with those who knew his American grandfather, Valimir. His manner and bearing are strikingly reminiscent of his Australian grandfather, Phantom. The sum of his style and type come down from the great American, Canadian, and Australian kennels that produced his ancestors. His attitude toward life is all Aussie: “No worries, mate! G’day!” We are so incredibly grateful to have this little bit of Havoc! back with us at La Vérité. Especially since we are also gifted with some wonderful attributes from Dundee’s lovely mother Australian Grand Champion Kenibea Keeping Th Faith, Kate. We look forward to presenting Dundee in the show ring and in the field as he matures and to sharing our lives with yet another beautiful creature. Dundee is co-owned and adored by Deb Rogstad of Velos Borzoi. |
